The FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) license is a mandatory certification for anyone involved in the food business in India. It ensures that food products are safe and comply with food safety standards. There are three types of FSSAI licenses, each catering to different scales of businesses:
1. FSSAI Basic Registration
- Who Needs It: Small food businesses with an annual turnover of less than ₹12 lakhs.
- Application: Through Form A.
- Validity: 1 to 5 years, depending on the application.
- Scope: Local, for small-scale food operators like petty manufacturers, storage units, retailers, distributors, and temporary food stalls.
2. FSSAI State License
- Who Needs It: Medium-sized food businesses with an annual turnover between ₹12 lakhs to ₹20 crores.
- Application: Through Form B.
- Validity: 1 to 5 years, depending on the application.
- Scope: For mid-sized manufacturers, storage units, transporters, retailers, distributors, marketers, etc.
3. FSSAI Central License
- Who Needs It: Large-scale food businesses with an annual turnover above ₹20 crores or those involved in exports, imports, or businesses operating across multiple states.
- Application: Through Form B.
- Validity: 1 to 5 years, depending on the application.
- Scope: Required for big manufacturers, 100% export-oriented units, large food chains, hotels, importers, etc.
Key Components of the FSSAI License:
- FSSAI Number: A 14-digit registration or license number, which must be printed on all food packages.
- Hygiene Standards: Businesses are expected to follow specific guidelines regarding hygiene, storage, and the handling of food products.
- Inspections: FSSAI may conduct periodic inspections to ensure compliance with the standards.
The license ensures that food operators maintain proper quality checks and contribute to public health safety by delivering quality food to consumers.
